#WithSurvivors, Always

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time for survivors, advocates, supporters, and community leaders to stand together in our mission to end domestic abuse.

Domestic violence stems from a desire to gain and maintain power and control over an intimate partner.  Abusive people believe they have the right to control and restrict their partner’s lives. This is often because they believe their own feelings and needs should be prioritized in the relationship or because they enjoy exerting the power that abuse gives them.

Tactics of abuse are aimed at dismantling equality in the relationship, leaving survivors feeling afraid, alone, threatened/manipulated, trapped, unsure of their own thoughts or opinions, ashamed, or pressured into situations they're not truly comfortable being in.

Over 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

At Peace at Home Family Shelter, we believe families escaping domestic violence deserve safety, support, and solidarity, including their pets! We are committed to a world where all people feel safe in their own homes.
