So you've decided to leave - what now? The basics on what to
expect when separating from an abusive partner, focusing on divorce,
paternity, and custody. Staff attorney, Ashley Norman, will walk
through the process and the basics of Arkansas law when it comes
to property division, alimony, child support, and child custody.
Leaving an abusive partner is scary enough on its own.
What a lot of victims don't
expect is that the abuse can
continue long after the parties separate. One way this
happens
is through litigation abuse – when an abusive partner uses the
court system to
try to keep power and control over the victim, whether
that means filing excessive
and/or dishonest pleadings, appealing cases
with a legal basis, or causing the victim to
rack up hundreds or even
thousands of dollars in legal fees and litigation expenses.
This discussion will focus on ways that abusers manipulate the
court system to
perpetuate abuse and what we can do to try to limit that.
Join us for this presentation
which will cover all of the legal
services provided by Peace at Home and explore the
impact
of these services within our community.
Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive
(and often, ex)
partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask:
"why doesn't she just leave?"
Private
Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. Through the
eyes of two survivors –
Deanna Walters, a mother who seeks justice
for the crimes committed against her at
the hands of her estranged husband,
and Kit Gruelle, an advocate who seeks justice for
all women – we bear
witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate
partner violence.
Supporters can access the film with a library card through Kanopy
throughout
the week and join Peace at Home community educator, Julia Beasley, and
members of the Peace at Home Legal Team to debrief on the film and
discuss the ways
that Peace at Home assists and supports survivors
in navigating the legal process.
How difficult can it be to leave an abusive partner? We all have
the same rights and
freedoms don't we? Yes, we do, but unfortunately,
the dynamics that hinder a person
from leaving an abusive partner
are the same dynamics that make it difficult for them
to avail themselves of
those rights and freedoms. Many survivors put their lives on the
line by
reaching out for help and making the courageous step to put their faith in
the
justice system only to be met with red tape. How does Peace at Home help
survivors
overcome the barriers that prevent them from getting an
Order of Protection? Join this
conversation with court advocate,
Chad, to find out.
Staff Attorney Ashley Norman will be hosting a Bar Certified CLE
for local attorneys to
learn about Domestic Violence in Arkansas,
Orders of Protection, Statute Overview and
Requirements as well as
Process for Obtaining OP from application to hearing. She will
also
discuss Peace at Home's legal program and volunteer opportunities,
including Pro
Bono for CLE hours.
Join bilingual advocates, Chad and Gaby, for a
presentation in Spanish to
learn how our legal program assists
Spanish-speaking survivors. Gaby and Chad will
explain Peace at Home's
legal services in Spanish and correct misconceptions about the legal process.
The ever-increasing ubiquity of technology and digital services
has eased
many of the burdens of modern life, but for some survivors,
it's also
increased the scope and efficiency of their partner's control.
Join legal advocate, Chad, to learn
about some simple ways that
we help survivors regain control of their lives
with digital safety planning.
